Project Description

YVE Eswatini’s TrashCash/Buyisela Emuva initiative is a transformative Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) System designed to advance sustainable waste management in Eswatini. This project promotes producer accountability for the entire lifecycle of their products while incentivizing consumers and waste collectors to participate in recycling efforts.

How it works

Using a point-based incentive system, participants can earn "TrashCash" rewards for recycling items such as e-waste, PET, cardboard, glass, and other materials. Buy-back centers will serve as convenient recycling hubs, and a mobile app will enable real-time tracking of recycling activities, fostering transparency and compliance with national waste regulations.

Importance/Value of the project

Buyisela Emuva" reflects the vision of giving back and restoring balance to the environment, empowering informal waste collectors through fair compensation and inclusion. With public education campaigns, data-driven policy insights, and job creation, the project contributes to building a circular economy while supporting livelihoods and reducing landfill waste.

TrashCash/Buyisela Emuva is a step toward a sustainable and environmentally conscious future for Eswatini.

TEMVELO Web Application

Project Description

YveEswatini is a dynamic, database-driven web application dedicated to cataloging and preserving the indigenous tree species of Eswatini. This platform is designed to provide users with a comprehensive resource for exploring the ecological, medicinal, cultural, and conservation significance of the country's native flora. Through a user-friendly interface, YveEswatini aims to raise awareness about Eswatini's natural heritage while supporting conservation efforts. The application showcases detailed profiles for each tree, including common and scientific names, geographic origin, medicinal uses, cultural importance, ecological roles, and conservation statuses. Users can navigate categories such as fruit trees, medicinal plants, and culturally sacred trees, and explore heritage sites where these species thrive. By integrating multimedia elements like photos and traditional stories, YveEswatini celebrates the richness of Eswatini's biodiversity and cultural history.

How it works

Homepage and Navigation: The homepage displays the latest trees added to the database. Users can search for specific trees using a search bar or browse by categories, such as ecological roles or cultural significance. Tree Profiles: Each tree has a dedicated profile page that includes its common and scientific names, geographic origin, ecological role, medicinal benefits, cultural significance, and conservation status. Visual elements such as images and illustrations enhance the user experience. Categories and Heritage Sites: Users can explore trees grouped by categories like fruit trees, medicinal plants, or culturally sacred trees. A dedicated heritage sites page links specific tree species to parks, reserves, or culturally significant locations in Eswatini. Conservation Status: The application features a conservation status section where users can learn about endangered species and ongoing efforts to protect them. Conservation statuses are informed by reliable sources such as the IUCN Red List. Subscription: Users can subscribe to receive email updates about newly added trees, changes in conservation statuses, and upcoming conservation events.

Importance/Value of the project

Biodiversity Conservation: YveEswatini highlights the critical ecological roles of indigenous trees and promotes their conservation in the face of threats like deforestation and climate change. Cultural Preservation: The platform documents the symbolic and spiritual significance of Eswatini's trees, preserving traditional knowledge and folklore for future generations. Medicinal Knowledge Sharing: By cataloging the medicinal benefits of native trees, YveEswatini supports the preservation of traditional healing practices and encourages sustainable use of natural resources. Educational Resource: This project serves as an educational tool for students, researchers, conservationists, and the general public to learn about Eswatini’s unique flora.
